Now, thanks to Persol, you can wear Steve McQueen’s actual sunglasses

Some celebrity brand endorsements are so valuable they simply cannot be bought. For Swiss watch marque Omega, for instance, the fact its tool Speedmaster model was worn by the first man to walk on the moon as he actually walked on the moon has forever secured its position as a grail wrist addition to trump all others.

Likewise, the fact that Humphrey Bogart wore a Burberry trench coat for his simmering turn in 1942’s Casablanca helped secure the British brand’s position as the pre-eminent outerwear manufacturer bar none.

For Italian brand Persol, which is owned by eyewear megalith Luxottica, the fact that Steve McQueen – the petrolhead movie star with a wardrobe to make all men (and most women) jealous and more sex appeal than he knew what to do with – chose to wear its frames (he famously wore a pair of 714s on the set of The Thomas Crown Affair in 1968) has forever secured its position as the coolest sunglasses manufacturer known to man.

Defined by its off-aviator shape, iconic steel hinges and superlative acetate construction, the 714 endures as one of Persol’s most popular styles. It stands to reason, therefore, that the brand has today – just in time for summer – released a new Steve McQueen special edition collection, which is available in a wide array of the style’s most popular hues, including lemon sherbet, caramel and, McQueen’s personal favourite, leather jacket brown.

The collection consists of five foldable sunglasses, including a special edition version finished with gold-plated lenses and a tobacco-hued Havana frame and another finished in the yellow hue of the first ever plane McQueen flew, a Boeing-Stearman prop. (Did we forget to mention the king of cool knew how to fly, too?)

The collection is now available online from, but it’s limited so you’d better get your wings on if you want to land yourself a pair…
