A 28-year-old man was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and then to jail Tuesday morning after he apparently drove a pick-up truck into Indiana University’s Atwater Eye Care Center.

The truck came to rest completely inside the lobby at the eye care center at 744 E. Third St. The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

No one was inside the building and no one was hurt. IUPD Chief Jill Lees said the driver was found nearby and taken to the hospital to be checked out before being booked into jail.

Windows were boarded up at Indiana University's Atwater Eye Care Center on East Third Street after a pick-up truck crashed into the lobby in the early morning hours Tuesday.

Lees said there was extensive damage to the lobby; the man drove the truck through the room where customers select glasses frames and into the reception desk.

She said investigators are looking into the suspect’s connection, if any, to the university or the optometry school housed in the building.

“The motive here is not clear,” she said.

The truck crashed through the south side of the building, through a wall of glass. It is located adjacent to a parking lot off Atwater Avenue, which the clinic entrance faces.
